NORDLYS is a non-profit Scandinavian dance performing group,
independent of other dance groups.

Given that our mission is to support the Scandinavian community and its traditions, NORDLYS performs at Pacific Northwest Scandinavian Festivals and related events. Private parties may also request appearances of NORDLYS. Performance programs consist of dances, music and costumes from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland without preference for any one particular country. Performances for many non-profit organizations are provided “gratis.” However, when cash remuneration is forthcoming, 10% is deposited to NORDLYS' account for incidental expenses and the remainder is divided among the participating NORDLYS performers of that event, to help defray transportation and related costs of performing.
NORDLYS is an amateur performing group. However, we strive for professionalism. Therefore, it is mandatory that each dancer perform in a folk costume of one of the four Scandinavian countries, and the dances must be very well rehearsed. Rehearsals are held once a week with special emphasis prior to a performance. As is the case for sports teams, and similar types of endeavors that depend on teamwork and preparation, a dancer may be asked not to perform if one or two rehearsals are missed preceding a performance.
NORDLYS enjoys a very democratic organization. Each dancer contributes their time, talent, and ability to take and give criticism. Participants are selected by current NORDLYS members on the basis of their Scandinavian dance experience, ability to attain the dance level and style, and compatibility with the rest of the group. Compatibility is important because the group works so closely together. Only the Director of NORDLYS extends the invitation for prospective new members to visit a NORDLYS rehearsal. Such an invitation is not a guarantee of acceptance, as the final decision is made by group consensus.
